Dorset Primary Schools Swimming Gala

The Dorset Primary Schools Swimming Gala's are organised by the; 

DORSET SCHOOLS SWIMMING ASSOCIATION

Areas Covered: East Dorset, North Dorset, Weymouth & Portland, Purbeck East Dorset, Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch areas 

Age groups: Year 4, 5 and 6.

Format: An area event is held (under ASA Laws and technical rules) to decide the fastest swimmer or relay team from each area. The fastest swimmer or relay team from each area will then compete in the Dorset Primary School Finals Gala's to represent their area.

Dorset Primary Schools Finals Gala dates for 2013

Year 4 primary schools finals gala will be held on Friday 28th June 2013. 
Year 5 and 6 Primary Schools Finals Gala will be held on Saturday 29th June 2013.

This memo is an introduction to the Dorset Schools Swimming Association’s competitive events programme, and it is hoped it will help everyone involved in the organisation of these events to better understand the current picture!

For Primary Schools events ( Year 4 / Years 5 and 6 ) the County is currently in eight areas:  West Dorset, North Dorset, Weymouth & Portland (sometimes known as South Dorset) , Purbeck,  East Dorset, Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch.

Each of these areas holds a Year 5/6 event – listed below are the events for each age group.

Year 6:   Boys / Girls

100m Freestyle
50m Freestyle
50m Breaststroke
50m Backstroke
25m ‘Fly
4 x 25m Freestyle Relay  ........ Relay Teams should all come from one school
4 x 25m Mixed Stroke relay ... Back stroke, Breaststroke, Br.St or ‘Fly, Frontcrawl

Year 5:    Boys / Girls

50m Freestyle
50m Breaststroke
50m Backstroke
25m ‘Fly
4 x 25m Freestyle Relay ......... Relay Teams should all come from one school
4 x 25m Mixed Stroke Relay ... Back stroke, Breaststroke, Br.St or ‘Fly, Frontcrawl

Year 4 
The Year 4 ‘teaching style’ gala, where there is little or no disqualification, and the swimmers are taken through the programme at a slower pace, in preparation for the Year 5/6 gala the following year – is quite short so some of the areas combine for this event ( Poole & East Dorset,  Bournemouth & Christchurch  ) West Dorset, Weyport and Purbeck which is the smallest area and N.Dorset which is the largest, run their own events.

25m Breaststroke
25m Freestyle
4 x 25m Freestyle relay  ....... Relay Teams should all come from one school
4 x 25m Mixed stroke relay .....  Back stroke, Breaststroke, Any stroke, Front Crawl

  Primary schools gala changes for 2013

Secondary Schools:  DSSA continues to organise a Secondary Team Relay event in September and the times from this event are forwarded to the ESSA South West District for consideration for the National Finals held in November. 

The Year groups are: Junior ( Yrs 7/8/9 ), Intermediate ( Yrs 10/11), Senior ( Yrs 12/13 ) An event for individuals in these age groups is held at Millfield School, anyone may enter.
